This event is an opportunity to be in a safe space to discuss our needs as therapists during this political climate and to discuss ways to manage our own emotions as we hold space for our clients and explore our own self care skills.

This is also an opportunity for collaboration. In the spirit of intersectionality, and to recognize our interconnected nature as therapists and as human beings at the level of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation, we are coming together to hear from our fellow therapists and support each other, as well as to be supported around our own anxiety and stress.

"I Know I Have ADHD. I Saw it on TikTok": A Practical Guide for Dealing with Self-Diagnosed Adult ADHD (18 May 2026)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

While ADHD is undoubtedly a real condition, does the recent and dramatic rise in self-diagnosis represent a clinical reality? Lately, more and more clients have been coming to us with a self-diagnosis of Adult ADHD after doing "research" on social media and are now invested in that identity. But what if you observe that their symptoms are better explained by a host of other causes like poor sleep, overwork, anxiety, or social media itself? How do you avoid giving the "official diagnosis" of Adult ADHD when it isn't warranted, but still maintain an alliance with the client?

Join us for a practical and clinically-focused discussion about the increase of ADHD self-diagnoses, what else can mimic its symptoms, and how to approach clients who believe they have ADHD when you disagree with their self-diagnosis.

EDUCATIONAL GOAL

To have a richer appreciation for the myriad causes of attentional difficulties and learn practical, clinical skills of approaching clients with these concerns.

Attendees will be able to:

PRESENTER: Shawn Barnes, M.D.

Shawn Barnes M.D. is an integrative psychiatrist in private practice in Encinitas, CA. He approaches clients as individuals first, rather than diagnoses. He takes a conservative and judicious approach to medications, and tends to focus on more holistic treatment modalities, such as diet, exercise, social connection, purpose, mindfulness, etc. He also has a subspeciality in helping clients to safely and comfortably taper off of benzodiazepines and other psychiatric medication. Learn from CAMFT's expert attorneys in a Law and Ethics webinar series to support your practice.

Children are cute, but the issues you often face in their treatment can be complex. In this three-hour CE course, CAMFT attorney Kristin Roscoe will use the story of 13-year-old “Jack” to guide attendees through common legal and ethical issues a therapist might reasonably encounter when working with a child. From consent to treatment, mandated reporting, writing letters, to court involvement, attendees will learn how to spot areas of liability and best proceed to support the treatment of minors.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify who may consent to the treatment of a minor and understand the particulars of a minor being able to consent to their own treatment.
Distinguish when some common mandated reporting scenarios may be permissive rather than mandatory.
Understand the legal and ethical risks associated with writing letters, particularly when there is court involvement.
Understand the psychotherapist-patient privilege and how best to support minor patients during custody or guardianship legal proceedings.

Presenter

Kristin Roscoe, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney takes CAMFT member phone calls regarding law and ethics issues and contributes articles on those subjects to CAMFT's publication, the Therapist. Prior to joining CAMFT’s legal team in 2019, Kristin represented healthcare professionals and hospitals in medical malpractice litigation at La Follette, Johnson, DeHaas, Fesler & Ames. Since entering the legal profession, Kristin has worked in various capacities presenting to and advocating on behalf of her clients both in and outside of the courtroom. Kristin received her B.A. from The College of Wooster in 2006 and graduated from The American University Washington College of Law with her J.D. in 2012.

Interpret the CAMFT ethical standards relevant to gift giving and receiving.
Asses when it is appropriate and/or inappropriate to either give and/or receive a gift during the therapeutic relationship.

Presenter

Alain Montgomery, Esq. is a member of the State Bar of California. Alain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prior to joining the CAMFT legal department, Alain worked in public interest law as a legal advisor for the Superior Court of California where he helped self-represented parties navigate the complexities of small claims litigation. As a member of the CAMFT legal department, Alain has served as part of the support staff for the CAMFT Ethics Committee and has represented the Association at various state regulatory board meetings. After graduating from college and before attending law school, Alain worked as a ski instructor at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort.

This law and ethics-focused training is designed for mental health professionals who are paneled with insurance companies, considering becoming in-network, or seeing clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits. While insurance provides increased access to care, it also introduces complex legal and ethical obligations. During the training, Ms. Jasper will discuss how to fully inform patients about insurance issues at the outset of treatment, bill accurately and respond to records requests and audits in a manner that complies with state and federal confidentiality laws.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify essential insurance-related disclosures that must be included in the informed consent process at the outset of treatment.
Implement informed consent procedures that fully notify patients about insurance issues and financial responsibilities at the start of treatment.
Execute accurate billing practices to ensure compliance with insurance company requirements and professional standards.
Identify common reasons for insurance record requests and audits.
Respond to records requests and insurance audits effectively while maintaining adherence to state and federal confidentiality laws, such as HIPAA.

Presenter

Sara Jasper, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney grew up in the Sacramento area. She graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Journalism. While attending CSUC, Sara Interned for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. and served as an editor for the award-winning weekly student newspaper, The Orion. Sara attended The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law where she served as a library research assistant to professors on campus. During law school, she also clerked for the California Judicial Council, Center for Children, Families & the Courts and for the National Center for Youth Law. Until she moved to San Diego last fall, Sara was on the Board of Directors for Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.) and is a member of the State Bar of California. Prior to joining CAMFT, Sara worked at the private firm of Middleton, Young & Minney, LLP where she specialized in education and employment law. Sara also worked as the Legal Liaison and Administrative Officer in the Office of the Chief of Police for the City of Sacramento for three years. She assumed her role with the City of Sacramento's Police Department upon graduating from law school.

Allied Intersectionality Now

This ongoing event will offer a safe space where we can discuss current stressors for therapists, explore solutions, and increase self-care.

It is also an opportunity to provide feed back to board member around your needs as SD-CAMFT Members.

Goals

Direct a safe space for therapists to relax and talk about what it is like to be a helper in such a time of high need from our clients.
To support each other and to build on our essential connectedness as a universal point of understanding.
Navigate ways to manage our self-care now more than ever.

We will have a Question/Answer (Q&A) session and will hold space to discuss Best Practices.

This event is provided by the San Diego Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. SD-CAMFT maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.
