The San Diego CAMFT chapter, in collaboration with the San Diego County Bar Association and Antonyan Miranda, present the second workshop in a 3-part series that brings therapists and attorneys together to explore and learn about topics that are mutually relevant to each profession and the unique working relationship that often brings the two together. Our second workshop discusses working with high-conflict clients from two different perspectives; one of a family law judge and the other from a marriage and family therapist. We will explore the topic from each perspective, including what to expect from working with one another, professional expectations towards responding to inquiries from either party, and normalizing the experience of collaborative work between therapists and attorneys. Please join us for dialogue, collaboration, and networking.

Registration must be completed on the SDCBA's website. Please use the "register" link below or copy and paste the URL into your browser.

    Program and networking from 5:30pm - 7:30pm

    Course Description:

Escalation can be triggered by trauma and it can be traumatic in and of itself, so a trauma- informed level of care and treatment is necessary when discussing high conflict clients. Jennine will use a trauma informed lens while viewing the problem and discussing solutions, which meets a high standard of care for licensed therapists dealing with a variety of clients. Mandated reporting requirements and safety concerns with high conflict clients that are standard requirements for all mental health practitioners will be addressed throughout the presentation. Jennine will also be contributing information on providing culturally competent therapy with high conflict clients, which is a legal and ethical requirement for education standards for all mental health licenses.

    1. Introduction

    2. Identifying And Assessing Conflictual Clients

    3. Handling Legal and Ethical Issues with Conflictual Clients

    4. Interventions and Strategies with Conflictual Clients

    5. Discussion/Q&A

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Gain a deeper understanding of assessing for high conflict clients and situations

    2. Gain a deeper understanding of effective interventions and strategies to support high conflict clients without losing them

    3. Learn strategies for deescalating high conflict clients and establishing safety both within the session and outside of the session

    Instructor: Jennine Estes, MFT
