COURSE DESCRIPTION

This presentation will provide an overview of the diagnosis, clinical presentation, epidemiology, comorbidity, assessment, and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It will focus on evidence-based, effective treatments, including exposure and response prevention (ERP), pharmacotherapy, intensive multimodal treatment, and novel approaches. We will have a Q & A and a discussion of cases following the presentation.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS

This presentation will help healthcare professionals to develop and increase their competencies to improve the overall delivery of behavioral health services to the public.

We will instruct attendees only in well-validated, evidence-based assessment methods and treatment modalities. We will discuss how OCD presents and is treated through the lifespan, and in people with various ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and sexual orientations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Provide an overview of the diagnosis, clinical, epidemiology, comorbidity, assessment, and treatment of OCD using ERP and pharmacotherapy.
  • List the diagnostic criteria, at least 2 clinic features, and at least one component of the epidemiology of OCD
  • Describe at least 3 ways of clinically assessing and diagnosing patients with OCD and comorbid disorders
  • Describe at least 3 significant components of exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for OCD, medication treatment for OCD, and novel treatment approaches
  • Identify and describe at least 2 effective treatments for OCD and at least 2 ineffective treatments for OCD

Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Partial credit will not be awarded.


Participants must be present for the entire length of the workshop to be awarded credit. Participants will not be given CEU credit if they are more than 15 minutes late and/or do not stay for the entire length of the workshop.

OUR PRESENTER: DR. SANJAYA SAXENA, M.D. 

Dr. Saxena is an internationally known expert in OCD, Hoarding Disorder, and related disorders. He served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the International OCD Foundation and was an advisor to the DSM-5 Workgroup on Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. He and his colleagues developed the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Hoarding Disorder. Dr. Saxena’s research focused on the neurobiology and treatment of OCD and Hoarding Disorder. He has authored or co-authored over 80 scientific articles and book chapters and has presented his work at many major national and international scientific meetings.
