COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an overview of sleep physiology and the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia. We will review the way that sleep is controlled and regulated. We will describe the diagnosis of insomnia and explain potential alternate diagnoses and medical mimics. The session will review evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of insomnia using a multimodal approach.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS

Attendees will develop a deeper understanding of the physiology, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Through developing a more sophisticated understanding of this complex disorder, they will be able to guide their clients towards appropriate interventions/treatments for this disorder.

Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Partial credit will not be awarded.


Participants must be present for the entire length of the workshop to be awarded credit. Participants will not be given CEU credit if they are more than 15 minutes late and/or do not stay for the entire length of the workshop.

OUR PRESENTERS: Juliet Morgan, MD; and Monica Federoff, MD, PhD

Dr. Morgan is a UCSF integrative psychiatrist and neuropsychiatrist joining CalPsychiatry in March. She specializes in the integrative treatment of clients with mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, neuropsychiatric illness, and healing from trauma. Dr. Morgan began her career as a neurologist, and understands the complex interplay between the structural “hardware” and emotional “software” in the brain. Dr. Morgan has been featured in several media outlets including KQED and CBS for her work with clients with Long-Covid. Dr. Morgan takes an evidence-based integrative approach to personalized medical care. She provides both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments, and draws upon many forms of healing to tailor a treatment plan to a clients unique needs. During training as both a neurologist and psychiatrist at UCSF, Dr. Morgan pursued additional training in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, addiction psychiatry, psychodynamic psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, advanced nutrition, and sleep medicine. She enjoys working with clients of all ages, with an aim of cultivating psychological growth and greater wellbeing. She teaches extensively on neuropsychiatry and neuroanatomy at UCSF, and brings a whole-brain approach to her clients needs.

Dr. Federoff is a psychiatrist who will be joining the CalPsychiatry team in July. She earner her medical degree from the University of California Irvine and is completing her psychiatry residency at University of California San Diego. Monica has dedicated years of training to furthering her knowledge in research of neuropsychiatric disorders, including earning her PhD in Neurogenetics from the University of College London in 2016. Over the course of her psychiatric training, she has developed a strong interest in outpatient psychiatric care, particularly working with patients struggling with mood and anxiety disorders. Through clinical experience, she has become particularly passionate about working with patients suffering from circadian rhythm disruptions and treating women’s reproductive mental health and well-being.
