COURSE DESCRIPTION
This introductory-level workshop builds cultural awareness, which includes an awareness of one’s own racial and ethnocultural identities and the significance of identity to psychological practice. Considering the growing diversity of the United States, the significant impact of ethnocultural factors on development, socialization, and well-being, and the increasing awareness of the impact of race, racism, identity, privilege, and power, it is important that counselors and psychotherapists engage in a life-long exploration of culture and identity.
This workshop defines key concepts related to cultural awareness, including intersectionality, privilege, marginalization, social identity, and power. This interactive workshop invites participants to explore their intersecting identities utilizing Pamela Hays’ ADDRESSING model and then map their shifting locations as part of marginalized and privileged communities. The workshop then considers personal disclosure of identity as part of psychological practice and ethical considerations.
Finally, tangible ways to establish and maintain professional practices that build cultural awareness are offered for life-long learning and professional development.
EDUCATIONAL GOALS
The development of multicultural counseling competencies and racial and ethnoculturally responsive counseling skills is a lifelong process. It continues throughout the professional career of clinicians. Culture Ally’s program content helps attendees build cultural awareness of their intersecting identities and biases, explore the influence of privilege, marginalization, and power on clinical practices, explore the impact of race and racism on clients and the psychological process, and engage in an effective antiracist and culturally responsive practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Utilize intersectionality as a framework for exploring the impact of social and cultural identities on clinical practice. Engage in a self-reflexive culturally responsive counseling practice for working with diverse clients. Attendees will leave the session being able to:
- Utilize the ADDRESSING model to explore social and cultural identities.
- Identify one category of privilege or marginalization that may impact your clinical practice.
- Identify 1 ethical consideration when disclosing personal identity as a clinician.

Course Completion certificates will be awarded electronically in exchange for a completed evaluation form. Please make sure the Program Administrator has your correct email.
Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Partial credit will not be awarded.
Participants must be present for the entire length of the workshop to be awarded credit. Participants will not be given CEU credit if they are more than 15 minutes late and/or do not stay for the entire length of the workshop.
