COURSE DESCRIPTION

This event will provide practical insight for mental health professionals in the area of psychiatric medications and how they can be a crutch or how they can benefit the therapeutic relationship (or not!) 

What effects might medications have on the symptoms you are trying to target in therapy? What new issues might medications actually cause and how can you spot them and be effective with your clients?  When is it OK for a therapist to discuss medication's or over-the-counter's with a client in the first place? What about all of this talk about ketamine and psychedelics and marijuana use? We will explore all of these areas and learn from each other.

This will be a casual discussion where you can share your own experiences, positive and negative as therapists working with medicated clients, and trying to collaborate with Psychiatrists.

EDUCATIONAL GOAL

Increase knowledge about psychiatric medications specific to their role in therapy and unintended effects. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify two unintended effects of medications. 
  2. Identify two ways in which medications can affect a client's participation in therapy.. 
  3. Identify two consequences of long term use of benzodiazepines.

Course Completion certificates will be awarded electronically in exchange for a completed evaluation form. Please make sure the Program Administrator has your correct email.


Course meets the qualifications for  3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Partial credit will not be awarded.


Participants must be present for the entire length of the workshop to be awarded credit. Participants will not be given CEU credit if they are more than 15 minutes late and/or do not stay for the entire length of the workshop.


This course is provided by the San Diego Chapter of the California association of marriage and family therapists (Provider #57330) is approved by the California association of marriage and family therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. San Diego chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.

OUR PRESENTER:  Shawn Barnes, M.D. 

Dr. Barnes is a psychiatrist who lives and works in Encinitas in private practice (www.sbarnesmd.com). He practices a conservative approach to psychiatric medications usually seeing them as short term bridges, while exploring treatments of diet exercise, purpose, mindfulness, herbal, supplemental and another holistic approaches. He is also interested in building bridges between therapist and Psychiatrist communities. He is the sole psychiatrist member of San Diego North County CAMFT.
